Car Wash Types Explained: Touchless, Soft-Touch, and Older Brush Systems

There are three main automatic car wash technologies in use in Canada today: touchless (chemistry + high-pressure water, no contact), soft-touch (closed-cell foam contact + chemistry), and older bristle brush (nylon or PVC bristles — largely phased out for paint-safety reasons). Popular Car Wash uses modern soft-touch tunnel technology — different from touchless, and very different from older bristle systems.

Touchless car wash

Touchless wash relies entirely on chemistry and high-pressure water — no physical contact with the vehicle. It is gentle in the sense that nothing touches the paint, but stronger detergents are required to compensate, and stuck-on grime (bird droppings, road salt brine, bug splatter) is harder to fully remove.

Touchless is a legitimate technology with a clear use case (drivers who specifically want zero contact). Popular Car Wash does not offer touchless — we run modern soft-touch tunnels because the soft-touch foam removes more grime per wash without compromising paint safety on modern clear-coat finishes.

Soft-touch car wash (Popular Car Wash)

Soft-touch systems use closed-cell foam material that is hydrophobic (does not absorb water), stays soft through thousands of cycles, and does not trap dirt or debris between washes. The foam contacts the vehicle gently while chemistry does most of the lifting, then the rinse and dryer phases finish the job.

Modern soft-touch is the industry standard for friction wash because it combines effective cleaning with paint safety on contemporary clear-coat finishes. It is what most car-wash operators across North America now run.

  • +Hydrophobic — does not soak up water + dirt
  • +Stays soft through thousands of cycles
  • +Paint-safe on modern clear-coat finishes

Older bristle-brush systems

These are the systems that gave 'brush wash' a bad name in the 1990s and early 2000s. Stiff nylon or PVC bristles physically scrubbed the vehicle and could trap embedded grit between washes, scratching paint over time. Most modern operators have replaced bristle systems with soft-touch foam.

When someone tells you to avoid brush wash, they are typically thinking of these older bristle systems — not the modern soft-touch foam technology that has replaced them.

Which type is best for your car?

For most drivers in southern Ontario the answer is modern soft-touch tunnel wash — it removes road salt and routine grime effectively while remaining paint-safe. Touchless is a fine choice if you specifically prefer zero contact and accept slightly more aggressive chemistry. Older bristle systems should be avoided if your operator still runs them.

Frequently asked

  • Is Popular Car Wash a touchless car wash?

No. Popular Car Wash uses modern soft-touch tunnel technology with closed-cell foam, not touchless. Soft-touch is paint-safe on modern clear-coat finishes and removes grime more effectively than touchless in our experience.

  • Will modern soft-touch foam scratch my paint?

Modern soft-touch foam is engineered specifically for clear-coat paint systems. The foam material is hydrophobic and does not trap grit between washes. This is the industry-standard friction wash technology used by car-wash operators across North America that prioritize paint safety.
